When I was in Anderson, I called Rachel and she helped *ME* identify some of the Sterling Homes there. Have you visited Rachel's blog?

Check it out at http://oklahomahousesbymail.wordpress.com/author/ffshoe/

I'm glad she helped you properly identify your kit house!

Regarding the Sears Del Ray at 392 Maple Avenue (in Waynesboro):

For much of its life it was the home of Miss Ebba Nore, a piano teacher (a native of Norway).

Originally, there were glass doors between the living room and the dining room. The foundation is poured concrete.

As built, the closet which protrudes into the bathroom is next to the short hall, which just wastes bathroom space.

And there was an exterior door is where the plan shows a china cupboard. Definitely, a big improvement. Small steps used to lead to the grassy backyard with a small pond.

A sunken patio would have been better than the present deck. And yes, the owner is proud that it's a sears home.

Thanks for the legible plan of the del ray model.

I live in Arlington, VA, and am the second owner of what I thought was a Sears kit house from 1937.

But, with Rachel's help, I found out I live in a Sterling kit house known as a Ma Cherie!

It's been a great 31 years living there and it is now for sale. The two house next to us are also Sterlings! Such a great joy to live in this beautiful house! Check it out: http://tour.mouseonhouse.com/property/144/23671/?Branding=0

Hey, don't make such sweeping generalizations. I am an architect.

I have been practicing for more than 20 years, and I am fascinated with the kit homes.

I have a collection of reproduction plan books of the kit home era. They may not have been well respected at the time, but they are irreplaceable classics now!!!

I can assure you that none of the messed up Alhambras photographed above got that way at the hands of an architect! Had the owners CONSULTED an architect, they'd have been much better off.

Thank you so much for this article! While doing some family history I came across a different article about this house with the 1912 photo.

It was amazing to put a face to a name in my family tree. Later while trying to add the photo I came across your article and was delighted to see the 1919 photo and more recent photos.

W.H. Senier did have children and in fact his grandson is still alive and well at age 95, He is my great grandfather.

It was interesting to read that on a map their was a “camp senier” as W.H. Seniers’ mothers last name was Camp and he also gave his son the middle name of Camp. It makes me wonder if it was hyphenated two last names or an actual camp.

Hi there just wanted to give you a brief heads up and let you know a few of the pictures aren't loading correctly.

I'm not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I've tried it in two different internet browsers and both show the same outcome.
